SOA Integration Goes Social

Project
EasySOA, http://www.easysoa.orghttp://github.com/easysoa,

Short description
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) involves complex technologies and, when done right, actors from the whole spectrum between business and IT. And it gets harder with new IT challenges such as cloud, agility and business architecture. How can we make SOA scale up ?
With the EasySOA project, Open Wide, Talend, Nuxeo, Bull and the INRIA labs bring a new component in the answer : an online, social, collaborative approach gathering business users and IT staff as well as SOA architects and developers. This allows on one side to add a lighter, agile SOA layer around « traditional » SOA, and on the other to provide an SOA framework that is really simple to use.

Description of the demo
The demonstration will show a couple of features such as Service Discovery by Browsing, focusing on business users' and applications' point of view, Service Discovery by Monitoring, focusing on IT staff's point of view, and Service Development Cycle plugins, bringing information from the developers' IDE (Eclipse) to the SOA collaborative environment (Nuxeo). And the demo will be completed when deployed on an EasySOA-compatible SOA runtime, such as Talend's ESB suite.

  Cedric Bosdonnat
  • Cedric has been involved in OpenOffice.org since 2005 starting with the first edition of Google Summer of Code.
  • He started by creating the Eclipse plugins easing the development of OpenOffice.org extensions but
is now LibreOffice Writer developer for SUSE adding cool features and fixing bugs.

Contributing to LibreOffice has never been so easy!

The problematic is pretty easy to understand: my documents are stored in a (preferably open source) ECM and I want to open them directly fromLibreOffice to avoid using yet another tool. Content ManagementInteroperability Services (CMIS) is a standard interface to access documents in an ECM: making LibreOffice a CMIS client would help us solve the problem.

That's what I started during a hackweek at SUSE, but it still needs tobe completed to be ready for users.

This demo aims at presenting the project, was has been done so far and what needs to be done.”

  Thomas Guyard
  • After graduating from INSA Lyon, I worked for two years at INRIA Saclay. I developed my first open source software "exxeditor", a GUI for editing XML files.
  • About a year ago, I started to work on elveos.org, a crowd funding website for open source software.
  • My full time work is now Elveos, and I hope it will be well received by the OSS community.

Elveos or, how to get paid while creating open source software

https://elveos.org, http://elveos.indefero.net/p/elveos/

Short description
Elveos is a crowdfunding web site for open source software.
On elveos.org, every user can request a feature on an existing software (or even ask for the creation of a new software). Every user with the same need can add a financial contribution on this feature request.
In parallel, a developer can make a development offer on a feature request. His offer include the price of the development, the time needed and a description on what he will exactly do. When enough money have been gathered, the developer can begin to make the requested feature.
Elveos is a fully functional crowdfunding platform with features specifically created for the free software. (For example, elveos contains a simplistic bug tracker system to help in the validation process of a development).

Description of the live demo

The live demo will show a real use case of a funding process, from the point of view of a developer:

  • How to create a feature request with a development offer
  • The milestone system (How to cut your development in pieces and get paid for each piece)
  • How to communicate around your funding needs with the built-in sharing tools.

FI-WARE methods and Open Source tools to build Future Internet Applications

After a brief introduction to the FI-WARE project and its role as part of a "major milestone in the development of Europe’s Internet of the Future", the presentation will focus on two main aspects. First, the strategic choice to build FI-WARE based on the concepts of Open Specifications and Generic Enablers. Generic Enablers are architectural building blocks on which the development, deployment and execution of Future Internet Applications are based.

Second, a novel approach for the adoption of a suite of tools aimed at instrumenting developer communities as well as the entire Future Internet Applications development lifecycle. Such tools will be implemented according to the Open Source guidelines, and are intended to take maximum advantage of Future Internet technologies.

Expected impact on everyday life of Future Internet Applications will be briefly discussed.

  Didier Durand
  • Didier Durand, 47 & married, engineer by training and techno-geek by passion, is co-founder of Eranea SA (Lausanne, Switzerland).
  • Various jobs over last 20 years in the management of big technology projects and administration of large corporate infrastructure: Publicitas, Axa, etc.
  • Strong supporter of Open Source even for the most stringent corporate environment!
  •  Initiator of the project Naca for automated migration to OSS and its further open sourcing.

Project NACA (cobol to java tooling, methods, return on experience)

This presentation will demonstrate how Cobol programs of legacy applications can be converted to their Java equivalent in an iso-functional and iso-structural manner. It will also focus on how interested companies should proceed from a global project perspective (methodology, organization, reduced risk, etc.)  to obtain most benefits of such a migration using available open-sourced tools.

To many corporations, OSS software means "free as in beer" rather than  "free as in speech" even if OSS zealots would wish the contrary!…

This presentation will try to present the best practices (gained from experiences in various projects) for companies entangled with highly expensive proprietary systems to reach those potentially massive savings brought by the Open Source Software.

  Stefano Scamuzzo

SpagoBI International Manager

  • Stefano has long working experience in the IT field. Initially involved in European research projects on hypertext technology, he then undertook the technical management of complex projects in several technological areas such as document and workflow applications, web based applications, enterprise portals and business intelligence applications.
  • He is SpagoBI International Manager and a member of SpagoWorld Executive Board, within Engineering Group's Research & Innovation Division. He masters the domains of service-oriented architectures and Business Intelligence, with a particular focus on open source solutions.

Agile BI at work with SpagoBI

SpagoBI, the only 100% open source business intelligence suite, supports the agile development of Business Intelligence applications, guaranteeing quick development, flexibility and continuous improvement. An agile approach reduces the time for production and guarantees high flexibility for end users, who are directly involved in the production phase, playing an active role.

Description of the easy-to-go live demo
The demo will show, in few minutes, the Agile BI virtuous cycle by means of SpagoBI, starting from a data warehouse:

Think
by using the SpagoBI Meta Editor, we will show how end-user can define  his/her own data domain, without having any specific technical knowledge, and how he/she can build his/her own business model to be used on a data warehouse or OLTP system. We will show how to explore data to understand which is the business model that better represent the right domain for the right user.

Build
we will show how end-user can rapidly deploy his/her Business Model on his/her own SpagoBI Server environment, in order to start using it right away, through a visual query builder which avoids his/her facing the complexity of data structures

Use & Share
we will show how to go further, drawing end-user's own multi-sheet report through a simple wizard, allowing to define simple and cross tables and various types of dynamic graphs. We will finally show how these reports can be shared with other users and/or enriched with notes and business meta-data.

This way, the different users can satisfy their data analysis requirements in a click with SpagoBI:
• in a few minutes, end-users can validate and use their new analysis, without having specific technical knowledge;
• SpagoBI developers can directly interact with end-users through SpagoBI community tools, to go on to a possible implementation of the analysis, which is defined by end-users both from a graphical and a functional point of view;
• the Business Model encourages next iterations, with easy-to-manage variations and a low impact.

Laurent Loiseau

The Vegetables of Death Metal or how to build an Music online community

http://www.silverpeas.org

Short description of the solution : Silverpeas is a collaborative portal solution with more than 30 easy to use applications.

Description of the demo :
We will demonstrate how to create a portal to share knowledge about metal music. We will use different peas (Silverpeas components) to manage artists bio, lyrics, create concerts galleries, share videos and pirate recordings. All this content will be classified according to the different metal branches from Symphonic to Death thus enabling transversal navigation in content. This should be the beginning of a new era of metal.Long hair not required but appreciated (specially during the head banging session)

  Claudio Marchisio
  • From Basic for Commodore 64 to PostGIS trough Forest Science, Soil Science, Climatology and … Quality Management: not a very linear path.
  • Two degrees: Forest Science & Economy.
  • Twenty years in Regione Piemonte working side by side with technicians involved in the environmental protection.

Now trying to build a knowledge sharing system based on open source software.

We want to present some tools that we are developing to support our colleagues that must analyze and control the risks associated with slope instability. But we are mainly interested in aspects involving organization and on the role that information technology has in influencing the work in a public administration.

The problem of sharing data and information has long been known and our organizations tried to reply with available tools. The earlier applications to capture and return data, including geographic data, date back to the late 80's.

ELGG/ OSS Social Engine Plateform: Paris Descartes Experience

Since 2006, Paris Descartes University has been using Elgg, an open source social networking platform, as a blog farm open to all faculty members and students.
Early 2007, the platform has evolved into a real social network called Carnet2 Descartes.

Carnets2 is used for any activity: from teaching and research to non-academic activities.
Users define their own digital identity through articles, interactions and skills descriptions.

Any user may create his own group to share information and perform groupware work. Groups are used to share items such as articles / wiki-like documents / files / events / bookmarks. Each items has a visibility parameter which can be modified only by its owner. This parameter can be set at four levels : private / selected groups / all Carnets2 users / public.

Researchers build an expert network through Carnets2 and communicate on research work.

Students learn how to manage their digital identity and to advertise their skills. They also learn how to publicly write about themselves. Carnets2 will soon be open to alumni, who will be able to interact with the students and faculty and of course keep their profiles and skills portfolios alive and updated.

The students especially value their skills and job projects. They expose their profile and skills in an ePortfolio page at the university level and also openly. Student articles and documents can be browsed and reviewed by any faculty member.

The Carnets2 has been defined by the University President as a strategic tool for building a strong academic membership and strengthening the bonds between faculty, students and alumni.

ELGG/ OSS Social Engine Plateform: How to develop & contribute

Elgg is an opensource social framework that runs on MySQL + PHP servers with minimal requirements. It's designed to build public or private websites with social functionnalities such as : intra/extranets, social networks, and other websites that are based on interactions between users, groups and content. Its core distribution provides many tools : members, customisable profile pages, groups, widgets, tags, blogs, bookmarks, wikis…

Elgg is caracterised by an extensible and developper-friendly framework :
it offers a high-level API that lets manipulate "ElggEntities" which acts like objects : sites, users, groups, objects, which are extensible, and overridable ;
uses an extensible views system (XML, RSS, mobile views, etc.), which lets extend or override almost any view, functionnality and functions of the core system ; great modularity and integration capabilities, and it interacts easily with webservices (both as client and server).

Its international growing community (more than 52K members) has developped numerous quality plugins that lets non-tech people build advanced communities with minimal technical skills, but is also a delight for developpers who like to embed/intergate existing libraries and third-party services.

This presentation will also present innovating Elgg plug-ins .. don't miss it!
