Last week, we meet a fOSSa fan
)) who had to convince his supervisor to let him go to the event. If you find yourself in the same situation, we thought it could be nice to have some arguments taken from our perspective & from web.
1. If you’re not in your office, where should you be so that your organisation finds it benefic ?
fOSSa is the right place:
- to discover new open source projects, trends & challenges // long-term benefits in terms of motivation & work-contentment, in addition to improved skills & productivity
- to network & meet OSS leaders // 'Engaging with the community' may be the bulk of the rationale behind attending academic conferences
- to grab OSS best practices & experiences // continuing professional development ?
The program of the event includes various tracks.
Education track
- Academic // grab nice ideas for your own university initiatives & OSS courses.
- Industrial & Developer // meet universities that are teaching & using OSS, find partners.
- Academic // I code, I publish, I exist? no way! Moreover, many universities are currently thinking of creating their own social network but why & how? This track is the right place to understand & get best practices about communities.
- Industrial // well same argument can be applied!
- Developer // there are rooms for new developements, discover which gaps have to be still filled in these new digital habitats.
- Developer // this track is your track!
- Academic // understand the new OSS eco-system that is currently ramping up: OSS model is a value creation process that needs a new joint collaboration of industries, academia & OS experts.
- Industrial // understand how you can use OSS, (re-)contribute & improve your performances.
- OSS Adopter // understand that open source is not only a technology, discover what’s currently happening in the real world, experience how openness can help you to foster your projects & avoid pitfalls.
- OSS Adopter // Understand how Open Source overruns new territories: see the dykes cave in!
- Academic, Developer // Disseminate your research & development results!
- Industrial // Discover original projects, engage future collaborations.
- Finally, we know that economic reasons may drive decisions
Participation to fOSSa is free. And if you have to travel a lot to attend the event, consider that attendance at fOSSa conference is likely to be cheaper than attendance at a MCSD course
It is also going to give you a living experience!
